The Vercors is one of the best mountain ranges in the French Alps for canyoning. Located between Grenoble and Valence, and easily accessible from Lyon, this wild region offers spectacular scenery: breathtaking waterfalls, deep gorges, and turquoise pools.
Whether you’re a beginner or a thrill-seeker, the Vercors has a variety of routes that allow you to discover canyoning in all its forms. Here is a selection of the 6 most beautiful canyons in the Vercors to explore.
The Écouges canyon: one of the most iconic in the Vercors
The Écouges canyon is often considered one of the most impressive in the Vercors mountains. Located on the Royans side, above the town of Saint-Gervais (38), this canyon is famous for its breathtaking waterfalls and wild landscapes.
This canyon has two distinct sections:
An upper section, also called Écouges 1, is narrow and narrow, consisting entirely of rappels between 10 and 60 meters, making this descent reserved for those with prior canyoning experience and comfortable rappelling.
A lower section, also called Écouges 2, is more open and accessible to beginners. It offers a complete and challenging route, suitable for first-timers, with beautiful rappels in stunning waterfalls, natural slides, and exciting jumps.
The Furon canyon: ideal for discovering canyoning

The Furon canyon is one of the most popular canyoning routes near Grenoble. It consists of two sections: the upper Furon (Furon 1) and the lower Furon (Furon 2).
This canyon is perfect for a first-time canyoning experience.
Its easy access and fun nature make it an ideal route for groups and families.
The two sections, upper and lower, offer two relatively different yet complementary routes:
The upper section, more enclosed and very aquatic, allows you to try rappelling, descend a zip line, and enjoy numerous jumps and slides in an exceptional natural setting.
The lower section, very open and closer to the city, is also very complete with rappelling, jumps, and slides, but everything can be bypassed.
The Léoncel canyon is a more secluded route located in the Drôme department, in the heart of the Vercors mountains.
This canyon offers a truly natural setting, earning it the nickname “the jungle” of the Vercors, with:
- a tropical-like natural environment
- beautiful pools and waterfalls with striking geological formations
- a fun and comprehensive progression
It’s perfect for those who want a sporty, full-day canyoning experience away from the crowds and immersed in nature.
It requires a one-hour hike to reach the canyon, which then features rappels into beautiful waterfalls, jumps of varying heights, and natural slides. However, everything can be bypassed along the entire route, making it adaptable to different skill levels and preferences.
It’s also possible to enjoy a water hike for younger children in the lower section of the river, ideal for discovering the activity without getting tired.
The Carmes canyon is quite literally an underrated route. It’s less playful than its neighbors, as there’s only a very small slide and a small jump; the rest is done by rappelling.
However, it boasts a very steep gorge and particularly striking geological formations, making it a very aesthetically pleasing canyon and ideal for beginners as young as 8.
Surrounded by nature, the surrounding vegetation gives it a tropical feel. You’ll also find numerous species here, such as the fire salamander, which you’ll likely spot during the descent.
It’s the perfect route for discovering the fauna, flora, and geology of the Vercors canyons. Short and with little water, combining nature exploration and canyoning makes for a unique outing suitable for families.
The Pissarde canyon, less well-known than the Ecouges canyon, boasts a final 80-meter waterfall that rivals its neighbor, the upper Ecouges.
This route, near Grenoble, is ideal for those new to canyoning, offering an introduction to descending major vertical drops in an exceptional natural setting.
The waterfalls, each more varied than the last, gradually increase in difficulty, culminating in two rappels down the final waterfall: one of 20 meters and the other of 60 meters, the latter requiring a delicate, exposed rappel.
The Comane, a small river in the Drôme region, just above Die, offers an easy route with turquoise waters.
It’s the perfect activity for families with children as young as 6 or 7. In a 1.5-hour descent, you can slide down small natural water slides, make a few small jumps, and try a zip line or rappelling for the more adventurous. Nothing is mandatory on this route; everything can be bypassed.
The Comane is best navigated from May to June to allow the white-clawed crayfish, a protected and rare species, to reproduce in this river.

How to choose your canyon in the Vercors
To choose the most suitable canyon, several criteria must be considered:
- Your experience level
- Your physical condition:
Some canyons have a short approach hike, while others require a 45-minute to 1-hour walk or take a full day. Sometimes the flow of the water and the technical difficulty of the route require a certain level of physical fitness. - The age of the participants:
Beginner routes can be tackled from age 7, while others require participants to be at least 12 or even 14 years old. - The time of year:
Most canyons can theoretically be explored year-round, but the water is cold in the Vercors region, and some canyons are closed for part of the year to allow wildlife to regenerate (such as trout or white-clawed crayfish).
